Program Description

This course is designed to develop technical skills in sewing and design. Students will learn entry level business skills that will allow a student to market indigenous sewing and designs to the local market. Students will learn the history behind culturally designed clothing and regalia. This course will include course relevant guest speakers such as Historical Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous Entrepreneurs, Indigenous clothing designers and Pow-wow Dancers. Guest speakers will add additional first-hand knowledge of traditional knowledge in respecting ceremonial cultural wear, day in the life business activities and current and modern indigenous fashion trends being used by local indigenous designers.

Full Description

The Certificate of Indigenous Cultural Sewing Program is designed to prepare students for careers in the fields of sewing and designing First Nation cultural products. The focus is on developing marketable skills in a practical (hands-on) academic environment. To develop the attitude and skills to grow with change in the areas of cultural design and related technology.

Note: This is a full-time program, 4 days a week. Enrollment is continuous but with limited seating availability. Refer to continuous enrollment start dates and available seats.
Program requirements: All classes are in person. This program requires you to have access to a personal laptop and reliable internet access to enhance your learning experience.

Program Learning Outcomes- Indigenous Cultural Sewing

Graduates of the Indigenous Cultural Sewing program at Logan College will be able to:

Cultural Knowledge & Heritage Understanding:

  • Recognize and honor the traditions, history, and cultural significance of Indigenous sewing practices and materials.
  • Identify traditional techniques, patterns, symbols, and garment types unique to different Indigenous communities.

Traditional Sewing Techniques:

  • Demonstrate mastery of hand-sewing and beadwork techniques used in Indigenous garment making.
  • Recreate traditional garments, regalia, and ceremonial items with attention to detail and authenticity.

Material & Textile Skills:

  • Select, prepare, and work with culturally significant materials such as hide, fur, feathers, fabric, and beads.
  • Understand the properties, care, and preservation of traditional textiles.

Design & Creative Expression:

  • Adapt traditional patterns and techniques into contemporary or functional designs while respecting cultural integrity.
  • Incorporate storytelling, symbolism, and cultural meaning into sewing projects.

Ethics, Respect & Community Engagement:

  • Practice cultural sensitivity and ethical approaches when learning, sharing, or displaying Indigenous designs.
  • Engage with Indigenous communities respectfully to learn, collaborate, and promote cultural continuity.

Project Planning & Execution:

  • Plan, design, and complete sewing projects from concept to finished product, demonstrating time management and technical skill.
  • Apply quality control and finishing standards to ensure professional-level work.

Documentation & Communication:

  • Record techniques, patterns, and project processes for educational, archival, or personal purposes.
  • Present and explain sewing projects with clarity, highlighting cultural and technical significance.

  • Develop skills applicable to careers in cultural arts, fashion, museum curation, education, or community-based creative work.
  • Build a portfolio that showcases traditional skills, creativity, and cultural awareness.

Admission Requirements For Logan College

Applicants are selected based on their overall academic performance and ability to meet the program’s entry criteria as outlined below.

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 (or equivalent) from a recognized secondary school.
  • minimum of one English language course at the Grade 10 level (or equivalent).
  • basic understanding of mathematics at the secondary school level is recommended.
  • Computer literacy, including basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, is strongly recommended.

Mature Applicants:
Applicants who are 19 years of age or older and who have not completed Grade 12 may be considered for admission as mature students. Mature applicants may be required to complete an English and Math assessment or provide evidence of equivalent skills and knowledge.

Important:
Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Logan College carefully reviews each application to ensure that students are well-prepared for their chosen program.

Note:
Students who begin their program in January (Winter Intake) may be required to continue their studies through the summer months (May to August) to complete all program requirements.

International Students
At this time, Logan College does not accept international students or issue study permits under the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. All applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or individuals legally authorized to study in Canada.

Mature applicants without a high school diploma may complete an English or Math assessment to demonstrate readiness. Once your application is reviewed, successful candidates receive a Letter of Acceptance and can confirm their seat by submitting a registration deposit.
